Write a research paper on the topic, “What Are the Five Characteristics of a Community?”A “theory” is an explanation of how something works. When we read in this class, our goal is to explore theories of writing. In other words, we’re trying to learn lessons about writing—what writers do, how audiences engage with texts, how writing shapes communities, etc. While reading, mark interesting or useful theories of writing.

After you finish reading, gather 5-10 of the most interesting theories of writing that you marked. List them in a new document (you can just copy and paste the theory as a quotation). If you want to include a long theory, just write part of it and add an ellipsis (…). Along with each theory of writing, include the author’s name and the page number, so you know where to find the theory later.

Then, add a comment about each theory of writing. Your comment should be 2-3 sentences. The goal is not to summarize the theory. Instead, you should say something about the theory. For example, you could (1) make a connection between the theory and another theory, (2) make a connection between the theory and a real-world phenomenon, (3) ask a question about the theory, or (4) build upon the theory with your own ideas.

Example of a Reading Note format
Author and Page #: The author’s name and the page number (so you know where to find the theory later)
Theory of Writing: A lesson about writing that you learned from one of the readings (you can just copy and paste the theory as a quotation)
Comment: Your own comments about the theory (2-3 sentences)
