CONCLUSION:
This paper based on student comments gives an insight into the circumstances that predispose healthcare students to leave their programme and identifies some of the reasons why they chose to stay. Our findings emphasise that students only usually considered leaving their programme when a number of factors combined to leave them feeling overwhelmed. The comments made by the students regarding why they decided to stay despite considering leaving give us some guidance as to where we should target student support. The students identified wide-ranging and varied issues that impacted upon their learning experiences; the most frequent of these were personal concerns and challenges and clearly these are beyond the control of institutions. Healthcare programmes in the North West of England recruit a diverse student population, this is desirable and is to be encouraged if we are to have a workforce that represents the population overall. However it must be noted that students who have caring responsibilities and on-going financial commitments when they start a programme, may need an element of flexibility if they are to successfully complete. It is essential that educators consider how the student s personal history and their relationships with ‘connected others’ may influence their learning experience and support and guidance are offered. Such consideration is particularly important during the early months of study as students adapt to degree level working and prior to the transition to clinical placements. Key factors that are within the remit of institutions to change include dissatisfaction associated with campus based learning and support and problems related to clinical placements. We recommend that clear guidance regarding staff–student commitments and the requirements of degree level study are made available to all students early on in their programme to help set reasonable expectations. In addition both placement and academic staff need to be clear on what constitutes appropriate levels of student support and learning experiences. The most frequently reported reason for deciding to stay was personal determination to reach a valued goal therefore if we are to encourage students to stay we need to ensure that the end goal of a career within healthcare continues to be both desirable and valued.
