Uncategorized Assignment-helpPurpose Your purpose in the final assignment is to bring one of the literary works from English 223 into 2021 by imagining a possible artistic adaptation. Prompt Adaptation, in the cultural sense, means translating work from one medium of expression into another. English literature has supplied artists with a rich vein of source material over the years: poems and stories have been adapted into films, TV series, songs, plays, comic books, dance, paintings, and much more. An adaptation can rework the entirety of its source (for example, a movie version of a play) or just a portion of it (for example, a painting depicting select scenes from a novel). An adaptation can be strictly faithful to its source (like the Harry Potter film franchise) or make strategic alterations suitable to the new medium, audience, or context (like Apocalypse Now, which re-sets Heart of Darkness in the Vietnam War). The adapter needs to decide what to translate into the new medium and how to do it, all while ensuring the new creation is in some important way “true to the original.” Consider the following selection of texts from our course: Unknown, “The Wife’s Lament” Donne, “A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning” Gray, “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” Blake, “The Chimney Sweeper” (I) Blake, “The Chimney Sweeper” (II) Wordsworth, “We Are Seven” Wordsworth, “My Heart Leaps Up” Clare, “The Lament of Swordy Well” Keats, “Ode to a Nightingale” Barrett Browning, Sonnet 22 Barrett Browning, Sonnet 43 Rossetti, “After Death” Hopkins, “Pied Beauty” Arnold, “Dover Beach” Conrad, Heart of Darkness Yeats, “Sailing to Byzantium” Yeats, “Lapis Lazuli” Auden, “Musée des Beaux Arts” Reed, “Naming of Parts” Walcott, “A Far Cry from Africa” Nagra, “A Black History of the English-Speaking Peoples” In the final assignment for English 223, you will select one of these texts and imagine a possible adaptation that will connect with audiences in 2021. Rather than composing a single unified paper, you will share your ideas by writing responses to four separate prompts — one about your preliminary thinking, one about the adaptation’s design, one about your personal role in the adaptation, and one about the adaptation’s appeal to audiences. Optionally, you can also respond to a bonus prompt to earn some extra points in the course. The bonus prompt invites you to actually create part of the adaptation. Format I have created a Google doc for you to use in completing this assignment. It contains the four prompts along with more detailed guidelines. Below each prompt is space for you to compose your response. Final Assignment Prompts Please click the link above to access the Google doc. You won’t be filling it out directly online. As with the Self-Reflection assignment, you will need to download the document to your computer. Do so by opening the File menu and then selecting Download > Microsoft Word (.docx). Once you open the file on your computer, you can begin editing it and providing your responses. It is already formatted for you in MLA style. Upload this document as your submission for the assignment. Rubric Points Possible: 150 Describe and explain the adaptation as you imagine it. Address the following: What will the medium of the adaptation be (film, TV, music, drawing, etc.)? What elements from the original will you adapt, and how so? [Your response] P3: Your role (50+ words) Describe the role that you personally will play in the adaptation. Address the following: What role will you play (director, performer, designer, engineer, marketer, etc.)? Why is this role the best fit for you? [Your response] P4: The relevance for audiences (100+ words) Explain the relevance of the adaptation for audiences in 2021. Address the following: Who will the target audience be? Why do you believe they will be interested in your adaptation? [Your response] Bonus: Adaptation sample For bonus points, take steps toward creating the adaptation. You might create a part of the adaptation itself (like an excerpt or a design), or you might create something related to the adaptation’s production or distribution (like a trailer or a poster).
