How does poverty affect the mental capacity of individuals and entire societies? 2. What role does unemployment play in the affects of poverty? 3. How is the poverty situation handled by our national and world leaders? While viewing our campus library, I encountered and interesting journal article entitled, The Effects of Knowledge About Poverty, Exposure to Poverty and Trust on Policymakers’ Perception About Poverty. The basis of the research involves the various ideals surrounding how policymakers make decisions that deal with poverty. Some of the findings within the research revealed that many policymakers do not entirely make their decisions to deal with poverty based on what they see or hear about the subject. Some of the decisions made have many other factors involved that are not solely based on the population being poor. Right now my topic and research questions might be a little broad; however, the ultimate goal is to narrow down my research and make the necessary changes during this project. References Lahat, Lihi. Response 2: Alex The three research questions I currently am thinking about for a research project are: 1. Do antiquated policies result in lower retention rates of minorities in the Air Force? 2. Do patriarchal norms in the Air Force result in lower promotion rates of women in the Air Force? 3. Does cultural assimilation lead to higher punishment rates among minority military members? The article I chose for this week’s form post was published in the American Sociological Review in 2008. The author argues that due to the structure of military policies and norms, black males have lower job satisfaction than white males. But on the other hand, white females are reported to have higher job satisfaction than white females. The author concluded that although job satisfaction rates for minorities in the military are lower than white males, minorities prefer being in the military over civilian life. This preference is due to structural policies against racism and sexual discrimination and not related to ethnic identity (Lundquist, 2008). Although the data in this article contradicts my first research question, it does point out how job satisfaction, among minorities in the military, is directly related to policies rather than racial acceptance, suggesting that minorities are more satisfied with racial and sexual protection rather than racial equality. I agree with this article that the military is making positive strides on anti-racial and sexual advancements in its policies. However, I cannot entirely agree with the notion that job satisfaction is related to the overall satisfaction of the military. I feel that the satisfaction of the military life cannot be measured by job satisfaction alone. To get an accurate picture of how satisfied military personnel are, the data must include the overall acceptance a person feels as a member. -Alex Source: Jennifer Hickes Lundquist. (2008). I think that it is an interesting subject that is overlooked. Stress affects our daily lives. It can be a good motivator but if left unchecked it can negatively affect your life. What are some of the illnesses manifested from stress? How does stress lead to work related injury and illness? How does stress affect work productivity? In Stress and stress-related illness (2017), In Gale (Ed.), Human diseases and conditions, stress is a survival mechanism that allows us to react in an emergency or sudden situation. It can help us be faster, stronger, or more focused. However, long term stress or unmanaged stress can have some negative effects on our bodies and minds. It can start with headaches and transform into a disorder or severe health problem. In the article An approach to assess the burden of work-related injury, disease, and distress by Schulte, P. A., PhD., Pana-Cryan, R., Schnorr, T., PhD., Schill, Anita L,PhD.M.M.P.H., M.A., Guerin, R., M.A., Felknor, S., DrP.H., & Wagner, G. R., M.D. (2017), it discusses the burden injury and disease weighs on not just the worker but on their employer, family, community and society. When someone is injured or ill and it affects their ability to perform their job duties or be productive members of society their entire lives are affected. An employer loses productivity and may have to replace their losses by hiring a replacement or compensation.
