You have been invited to observe in a preschool classroom at Consuela’s Cuddly Literacy Center. You observe Marcella and her friends reading a big book. Flora and Vincent are playing in the indoor sandbox pretending to be construction workers building a big building. Nastasia and Frank are counting Cuisenaire rods. After they count the rods, they are organizing the rods and placing the rods in bins by color. Maria and her friends are using kitchen utensils to make play dough and string beans for planting. You learned at Rio Salado using utensils is a practical life skill. As you walk around the class, you observe a group of young children using cardboard blocks to build a “huge” building that will reach to the sky. Consuela tells you the children are exploring and experimenting to see how tall they can make the building. Your first thought is, “This is chaotic.” However, you are interested in the various activities and want to create a classroom using an approach that allows for exploration and creativity.
Identify and describe the learning approach you observed. In the description, provide at least three characteristics of the approach.
Provide a rationale for your decision. In the rationale, identify three activities that align with three characteristics of the approach.
Provide at least three ways the approach you identified is similar to other approaches studied in the lesson.
