Writeup Description: This is a broad-based topic that you will research that includes “district” geothermal heating and cooling, heating, or energy (power production) systems. By “district” this means multiple buildings are tied together and share the energy, whether it’s electricity, heating and/or cooling. The buildings can be owned by the same entity (like a university campus) or multiple parties, like an entire neighborhood or city block. Other terms for district include “community networked” or “campus” systems. Some systems tap into various types of “thermal” energy like hot rock geothermal, ground source geothermal, heat exchange with wastewater, and waste heat from industry or other sources. The various sources and buildings are tied together and share the energy. One buildings waste heat can be needed heat by a neighboring building at the same time. In this way, energy is not wasted. In this country they are not as common as in Europe. There are some examples of such systems in Canada. The Internet has other case studies for district heating or energy systems in Europe, particularly Sweden, Netherlands, Switzerland, and France. Closer to home, local gas utilities are being required to perform geothermal district systems as part of approvals to increase their rates to customers by the local Public Service Commissions. In Boston, MA, area, the grass-roots organization MA HEET started an initiative to promote “community networked” systems. See some reports from meetings held by HEET in the same folder. Notice there are dozens of stakeholders involved from all walks of society. On a personal note, my company was recently awarded a contract to select and design the system for Con Edison, and we are in the running for the Eversource pilot study too! This represents a new business model for utilities to provide clean, electric based thermal energy to their customers, instead of natural gas. Mayor DiBlasio last week issued a press release that the city is taking on a district geothermal system project as well. It is the future and is keeping me/us very busy.
