For this assessment task, you must use the kinds of theoretical and critical devices we have identified thus far in order to help you write a “scholarly” discussion of Philip K. Dick’s short story and/or Richard Linklater’s film adaptation of A Scanner Darkly. In exploring the PhilDickian world, you might consider the dominant themes and ideas that occur in both texts, or consider the ways in which Linklater’s film uses a number of different elements, including the manner of its own construction, to convey these ideas. Furthermore, you could examine the ways in which biographical detail (relating specifically to Philip Dick) might aid our understanding or interpretation of the central motifs, themes and ideas at work in both texts.
