These secondary sources can focus on biography of the author, the author’s work in general, specific critiques about the short story, and outside sources that might help students in their analysis of a particular character. Once the research has been completed, students must read each source critically, then prepare their notes using the format outlined in class: 1) bibliographic information for the Works Cited page; 2) quotes and paraphrases using correct MLA parenthetical citation form after the quote or paraphrase as well as a two or three word slug above the quote or paraphrase to quickly identify the material in the quote or paraphrase; and a summary paragraph of the source. This process should be used for each secondary source as well as the primary source–the short story itself. For each source, the student will create a bibliographic listing for the Works Cited page, select quotes from the source, paraphrase material from the source, and write a summary paragraph of the source. The student will have at least four typed pages–one for each of the four sources. The notetaking for each source is worth 25 points based on completeness for a total of 100 points.
