TOPIC/OBJECTIVE: Select your own topic. Remember to choose a topic that is of interest to you and to your audience, one that you can find enough research information to include in your speech presentation, and one that you can relate to your audience. The objective is to inform your audience about a topic that will be relative to them and one that will keep their attention.

Review the speech evaluation form to see what areas you will be graded on. Incorporate feedback from previous speech evaluations.
SUPPORTING MATERIAL: Provide a lot of vivid details. Use examples, testimony, stories, quotes, descriptions, etc. This makes the topic interesting to your audience and helps you keep their attention. This material is ONLY necessary if it helps “show” or “explain” your topic to your audience. The material should “support” what you are saying; not detract from your presentation.
VISUAL AID: Similar to support material, use a visual aid if it helps to “show” or “explain” your topic to your audience. The visual aid should “support” what you are saying; not detract from your presentation. Examples include a collage of photos in a PowerPoint presentation. The visual must be large enough for an audience to see. Remember: you MUST refer to your visual aid, explain it, describe it and demonstrate how it contributes to your presentation. If it helps you, ask another student in class to advance your PPT slides for you. You will need to work out (ahead of time preferably) how you will signal that student to change to the next slide. Your note cards are very handy to help you remember to do this as well.
STRUCTURE: You must use the speech structure provided in the SPEECH MODEL presented in class. Speech Model Components: 1. Attention Getter 2. Introduction- includes Central Idea Statement (or Thesis Statement) and a preview of main body points 3. Main Body 4. Conclusion- includes a review of main body points 5. Closing
