Directions: The total analysis will include introduction, 6 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Value: 100 points (20% of grade): 6 sections worth 15 points each plus 5 points each for the introduction and conclusion Structure and Content: Introduction: will include 1) an attention-getter, 2) basic background material about the film, such as awards or historic interest about the subject of the film, 3) limited credits, such as director and major actors, 4) a very limited plot summary (50-75 words), 5) the theme of the film and 6) the thesis statement of the paper Unde rlined and always the last sentence of the introduction). The total length of the introduction should be about 175-250 words. Be sure to use the name of the film near the beginning of the introduction and place it in italics. Six Body Paragraphs: Narrative Form: include relative discussion of cause and effect, time, patterns of development, narration, etc. Cinematography: Camera position (Angle, Level, Height, Distance) required, and at least one of the following 3 elements of photography: lighting styles, color symbolism, or lenses that produce special effects Mise en Scene: relation of the general mise en scene of the film to the themes of the film, including at least 3 of the following 5 elements: 1. setting, 2. set, 3. costume (including props and makeup), 4. photography and lighting, and 5. staging of action (movement) Mobile Framing: Moving camera shots, distortions of motion, the psychology of movement, duration of the image Editing: references to graphic editing, relations between shots, continuity editing, crosscutting, etc. Sound: 1. music required (specific titles of pieces, music genres, instruments as appropriate), 2. spoken language required (quoted dialogue, subtext, nuance) and 3. sound effects, especially as they establish character, build themes or underscore dialogue · Critique: This serves as your conclusion. The elements above in parentheses are considered a rough guide, but some elements are a requirement. Reread each chapter on the above subjects carefully as you conduct your analysis. Cinematic elements must be clearly linked to the themes they reveal. Chapter study, film-viewing notes, and discussion board responses are your preparation for the paragraphs of this paper. This is not a new assignment for you, but it is a longer analysis combining all the content you have mastered thus far.

Format: Send your work via the assignment feature in BlackBoard as an attached file created in Microsoft Word: double-spaced (size 12 font, Times New Roman). The file attachment should be named with your last name and the abbreviation, syn. For example, name your file Smith syn.doc. Also, put your name on the first page of your synthesis paper in the top, right hand corner. Clearly head each section of the analysis with the topic in bold (Introduction, Narrative Form, Cinematography, etc.). Research, other than common facts about cast and credits, is not encouraged for this assignment. If you do decide to include borrowed material for support, use MLA style for your in-text citations and attach a Works Cited (MLA style) as appropriate. Works Cited means those works you actually cite with lead-in devices in the paper. If you never introduce borrowed material with a lead-in device and close with a parenthetical reference device, you have no need for a Works Cited page. Wikipedia and other encylopedias are not academic sources, so do not cite them in your paper. You will need appropriate and sufficient transition sentences that lead the reader from one subject to the next. These are just as important as the topic sentences and will contribute to the fluidity of your paper. The conclusion should provide a sense of closure for your reader and a reflection about the elements that most contribute to its success as one of the significant films of the 20th or 21st Century. A conclusion restates the important main points of the paper. The conclusion is usually shorter than the introduction and may run only 150-200 words in length. Each of the 6 body paragraphs will be worth 15 points for a total of 90 points with 5 points each for the introduction and conclusion. If you leave out a paragraph, you have automatically lost 15 points. The evaluation rubric is attached. Study it before you begin to write and use it as a guide. Each paragraph, of course, must have a topic sentence that clearly relates back to your thesis statement. The topic sentence must preview the elements you will discuss in the paragraph using keywords. The topic sentences are worth a significant number of points toward the value of each section, so write them with care. Tips: This is not a film review, so do not make value statements, such as “great,” “fantastic,” “good job,” etc. Avoid all the errors listed in the “Friendly Reminders,” especially elimination of passive voice and first and second person. Write in present tense to discuss film. Evaluation: Your grade will be based on quality of content (development) and quality of writing. Points are deducted for mechanical errors, stylistic errors, sentence structure errors, poor or missing topic sentences, and faulty organization as well as errors in development.
