I grew up during a time when people were separated by race, and even though it was tough, I try to talk about it in a straightforward way. Unfortunately, I lost a friend in a bombing at our church in Birmingham, which showed me firsthand how violence and targeted attacks can affect lives. My dad really liked politics and history, and I got into it too. By the time I was 17, I was into international politics and diplomacy. I studied the Soviet Union and worked on national security policy in the late 1970s. I ended up working in public service, including at the White House, focusing on Soviet affairs. Later, I became Secretary of State, a big job that required confidence in speaking. When the 9/11 attacks happened, I was sure there would be more attacks. This changed how we think about keeping the country safe. But, some people criticized me, saying I didn’t think enough about how war affects people and causes them to lose their lives. Despite this, my work after 9/11 had a big impact on how the United States keeps itself secure.
