Do not just copy and paste your previous papers.
Using your topic, create an argument in support of your position. Why is this the morally correct action? Here, you can appeal to a particular moral framework (e.g., Kant’s deontology, utilitarianism, or virtue ethics) and/or meta-ethical position (moral relativism or moral objectivism). Your argument can also include responding to a possible objection. Use two class readings to support your argument; you can also use your topic to critique one of the readings.
Remember to include a paragraph (typically after the introduction) where you introduce your topic and discuss: What’s at stake? Why is this an important topic to discuss? Do not let this paragraph overtake your paper, your focus should be on the argument.
Some questions to prompt reflection: The final paper is meant to have you reflect on all the previous papers and craft the strongest argument for your position. You’ve now spent a lot of time thinking about your topic, which are your strongest claims? For example, thinking about the reasons you gave in Short Paper 1, how have they developed? What additional reasons can you provide that may not have been obvious to you when you first wrote Short Paper 1? How do they connect to subsequent discussions you explored in Short Papers 3 & 4. Short Paper 2 can also be developed into a potential criticism that you could respond to. If, after the course of the Short Papers, your position has changed, you’re welcome to write from this new position. Adding nuance to your position may also help if you find yourself relying too much on your previous papers.
