part of a project portfolio to contribute to the organisation’s strategies? What if the organisation does not
have a portfolio management system or culture yet? What challenges you might face and how you will
overcome them.

5. Recommendations for CW Preparation
To avoid rework, last minute changes and rushed through analysis, start writing when you are sure that you
have:
– Reviewed the lecture and seminar materials, reading and references, your notes and extra material from
your private study.
– Understood the backgrounds in 3.1.
– Reviewed and fully appreciated the coursework purposes (what you are supposed to learn and how it is
evaluated) and the coursework instructions.
6. Assignment Workshop & Q&A
We will have an assignment workshop and Q&A session to discuss the coursework in seminars. To prepare a
quality coursework, you need to engage with these, ask your questions and pay full attention to others’
questions. Asking questions very close to the submission deadline, over the weekends and University closure
dates might not be helpful.
7. Writing Format
Page Margin: Normal
Structure: Separate your text with enough and appropriate titles and subtitles. Use numbering, clear, specific
and relevant phrases.
Titles Font: Larger than 12, Times New Roman, Calibri or Arial, bold, and should be easily distinguishable from
the body text.
Body Text Font: 12, Times New Roman, Calibri or Arial.
Line Space: 1.5 for the main text. Add space before and/or after the paragraphs as appropriate.
Paragraph: Should be ‘justified’. Avoid using very long paragraphs. Break large text into reasonable,
manageable paragraph with a clear central idea and a few sentences focused on one or two clearly relevant
themes (as described in the Study Skills sources).
Figures and Tables (F&T): Font 10 or 11, Times New Roman, Calibri or Arial. Line spacing should be at most
1.
AUT Term 23/24
v1 -2023-24 BUSN9192
All F&Ts should have clear and specific titles followed by citation and page number (if applies) to the
source(s) that you have taken the whole F&Ts or have extracted their info from.
If you had developed the table/figure yourself (only based on your own reflections and findings), this should
be clear to the reader (both in text and on the title). All F&Ts should be referred to in the text with enough
explanation on their purpose, source, citation or clarification that they were developed based on your
reflections, etc.
All F&Ts should be place as close as possible to the paragraph that refer to them. They should not be broken
into different pages (as far as possible). Long tables in multiple pages should have repeating headings.
Cover Page: The first page of your submission file should present the completed Assessment Submission
Form that you will download from the Assessment section of BUSN9189 on Moodle. The form must show the
coursework word count (counted by Microsoft Word rather than Turnitin) and the coursework title as well.
Table of Contents: Provide the list of the titles and subtitles (increase indent) used in your text with their page
numbers on the first page after the cover page.
8. Further Notes on Sources & Referencing
– Essential Readings: It is crucial that you initially study the main reading and references for the lectures
and seminars before your further background studies and writing the cw. This will ensure you have
appreciated the fundamentals of the module and are able to select the most relevant extra sources
to read.
– Further Sources: Read a good range of relevant textbooks and papers from peer reviewed academic
journals(especially PM journals). Random selection of many sources or selecting the first search result
will be easily reflected in the text.
– What needs citation: Anything you have learned from academic and professional literature (e.g., books and
peer reviewed journal papers). Anything you have learned from the valid websites related to this assignment
(e.g., the KU website).
– Correct citation: It is necessary to follow the Harvard referencing system as detailed in ‘Cite Them
Right’ (accessible through the Library Catalogue).
**Important note: Citation should be detailed enough to clarify and acknowledge the sources of the
info you are referring to and those that have informed your ideas. Writing a long paragraph based on
AUT Term 23/24
v1 -2023-24 BUSN9192
one or more sources, mixed with your own ideas, and adding the citation only at the end of the
paragraph creates confusion and will not clearly demonstrate your own reflections. If you are not
sure why, you need to explore this via the study skills and academic writing books and library training
sources.
– Lecture slides: These are for teaching purposes and guiding you through your background studies. It
is expected that you study the main sources used for the lectures. The slides should NOT be used as
the only reading material for preparing your coursework. These must NOT be used as your references
in the cw, even when cited. The text and pictures on slides should NOT be copy/pasted to your essay
as if they were taken from the main source or drawn by yourself.
All lectures have reading and/or references list, for your further and in-depth studies.
– Reference List: Create a reference list (use Harvard style) rather than bibliography. In a reference list,
you will only include the sources that you had read, used and cited in the cw. The sources that you
had read but not used in the text should not appear on your list (unlike bibliography). This could be
taken as plagiarism.
9. Coursework Word Count (word limit)
3.3.
– The Regulations for Taught Programmes of Study dictates that ‘Students are required to state the
total word count of written coursework submission. The word count will include everything in the
body of the text, such as quotations, citations, footnotes and subheadings. It does not include the
coursework title, references list and appendices, which does not form an essential part of the text.
– You should avoid or minimise using these as far as possible: quotations, footnotes, and appendices.
– Word count for the overall essay is 3,000 and you are strictly advised not to exceed this limit.
– Tables and figures should not be used to circumvent the word limit but should be developed
purposefully, explained, cited and add value to your text. All parts of the text should have a format
that Microsoft Word can count the words.
– You should include the word count (from Microsoft Word, not Turnitin) on the submission form.
– The extra words beyond the word count might not be marked. There is no penalty for cw with less
than 3000 words. The aim is to do a quality work rather than filling in 3000 words for the sake of it! It
is up to you how to manage and make the best use of the given space and the opportunity.
– You will save words if you write precisely.

10. Academic Integrity, Plagiarism & Using Turnitin
Plagiarism is the act of presenting ideas or discoveries of another as your own. To copy sentences, phrases
or even striking expressions in a manner which may deceive others is plagiarism. This includes copying text
from books, periodicals, the internet or another student. If you do not acknowledge your source then you are
committing plagiarism. The University does not accept plagiarism and on the contrary, is taking a strong stand
against it. The University will impose severe penalties if plagiarism is found in coursework essays,
dissertations, projects or examinations scriipts.
Guidance for students on academic integrity and avoiding plagiarism is available here.
Turnitin is the plagiarism detection software used within the Business School and wider University.
11. Coursework Submission
– All coursework must be submitted by the deadline as stipulated in the module outline/ KentVision,
normally 12 noon on Wednesday of the deadline week. Any general enquiries regarding coursework
submission i.e. issues with Moodle/Turnitin links should be referred to the KBS Programmes
Administration Team (email@email.email).
– All students are required to submit ONE electronic copy via Turnitin on Moodle, of each piece of
coursework.
– Students MUST submit the electronic copy to Moodle by the deadline specified. No email notice will be
sent to the student to remind them of this deadline. Students are strongly advised not to leave upload
to the last minute – we are unable to accept technical difficulties as a reason for late submission.
– Late work is awarded a zero. If you are unable to meet a coursework deadline for exceptional reasons
you must submit concessionary evidence. Where your concession is not approved, a mark of ‘0’ – zero
will be recorded for late work.
– Note: Lecturers will not grant extension or remove the late penalty. Such requests should be processed according
to the school’s regulations and procedures.
