Of the authors we have read, which author creates a more convincing experience? What does your chosen author imply about the fragility of our sense of safety and normalcy?
How do they develop a sense of fear and tension through the subversion of the normal?
In answering these questions, you will want to also consider the following thoughts:
• Consider what your author believes comprises our sense of safety.
• Consider what your author does to subvert that sense of normal.
• Consider the attitudes your author has toward human nature.
Note: You should not try to answer the bullet point questions posed above in your essay because that isn’t manageable for a a paper of this length. Those ideas are given to you simply to give you a jump start in your analysis. They are akin to the pre-reading questions you usually get when you read a text.
Literary analysis consists of breaking a text down into its component parts (its language), determining what these parts mean, and then concluding how these parts relate to the whole. A literary analysis is simply a persuasive essay. It is a kind of map: the thesis says, “I am here,” and then proceeds to lead the reader to that place by. laying out and explaining the evidence piece by piece.
The best evidence for your thesis will be summary, paraphrase, and direct quotations from the texts. It may be helpful for you to think about writing your papers as if you were a lawyer making your case. In your paper will provide evidence to back up your case.
An appropriate thesis for a paper on this topic might look something like this:
“Through the disorienting presence of Arnold Friend, Joyce Carol Oates distorts Connie’s mundane life, sending her into a hellish landscape of grotesque imagery from which Connie will never return.”
Then, in your essay, you would first establish what is normal for Connie and Oates’s opinion about girlhood and teenage culture in the era through an analysis of the elements of her daily routine. Then you would move on to describe how Arnold would move on to describe how Arnold Friend’s distorted figure and ideas warp
Connie’s existence and show why (through analysis of the individual elements) this distortion leads to her ultimate doom.
This paper should be at least 5 Pages, typed, double spaced, ingeniously titled, and page numbered, all in exact MLA-styled page formatting.
You may choose from the following stories we have discussed in the the Literary Analysis modules:
