An example of CDS and data analysis that had led to improvement in care and cost savings: An “initiative at [Johns Hopkins Hospital] involved educating staff on the new policy [to reduce blood transfusions], frequently using the phrase “Why give two when one will do?” An advisory alert was then established in the electronic health record to check blood units ordered and message clinicians if they went against the guidelines.
