What are some benefits and drawbacks of universal design, its applications,and implementation?

ObjectivesIn this course students will be introduced to the sociology of disability and universal design. Forthis assignment, students will write a reflection paper that assesses universal design anddiscusses its applications.Students should take at least a week, ideally two, to collect empirical observations for thisassignment. During this week, they should keep a journal that notes the possible applications ofuniversal design in various aspect of social life. As they go about their daily lives each day theyshould observe, think about, and note how universal design might be applied. No realm or aspectof social life is off limits—the applications of universal design are limitless. For example,consider different aspect of daily tasks (food consumption, cooking, cleaning, beauty andhygiene, transportation, etc.), different features of accommodations and architecture, differentaspects of school and work (reading, writing, communicating, computer usage, social media,etc.), and more. What are small or big design adjustments, locally and/or globally, that could bemade to increase the quality of life for all individuals, including individuals with a range ofphysical and psychological needs?At a minimum, write-ups should address the following questions:- Description: What is universal design?- Applications: How can it be applied in different aspects of social life?- Assessment: What are some benefits and drawbacks of universal design, its applications,and implementation?The goal of the paper is for students to demonstrate a thoughtful assessment and application of universal design.
