To better understand this short story, I needed to get some background information about the culture of the people and the location of the story. The is Louisiana and the Creole people. This article explains that the history of the creole people is very much so just the story of Louisiana. The “Cajuns” strong mind state and resilience comes from their past. In the 1700’s the creole people were forced out of their homes and speeded around the 13 colonies. Those living in the Dominican area traveled up and settled in Louisiana, they were allowed to stay there by the British parliament. This background is good to know when reading the short story, it helps me relate to the struggle.
