People living in the TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY began to experience possibilities and problems that are specific to their region even as they continued to grapple with common challenges. Terrorism, the war against terror, economic crises, global warming, demographic changes, poverty, disease, deepening inequalities, immigrant issues, and genocide are some of the problems that those of us who live in the twenty-first century must still confront. Finding solutions to these issues also allows for other kinds of local, regional, and global possibilities. Even so, anti-globalization sentiment is widespread and has found appeal in various societies, especially those in the poorest parts of the world—where the costs of globalization can be lethal.
