Is the desire and effort to accumulate wealth a natural force for good?

Locke and Rousseau offer very different conceptions of human nature in the course of their doctrines. Locke observes humans to be naturally competitive and industrious. Rousseau does not deny these observations, but attributes them to modern civilization, rather than nature. Moreover, Rousseau argues that the same psychological forces that fostered these Lockean qualities are also responsible for much unhappiness and suffering in the world (or at least 18th century Europe).Is the desire and effort to accumulate wealth a natural force for good that has resulted in the wonders and marvels of modern life, or is it a symptom of deeper psychological scars as humanity transitioned from savagery to civilization?
