In-depth interviews were utilized to solicit the testimonies of North District residents. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, in which the authors would not strictly follow the formalized interview questions. First, informants would be asked to identify changes in their community during the past 10 years. Then, the informants’ stories and feelings, as well as the impact on their community life would be solicited. All interviews were carried out through telephone instead of face-to-face. They lasted about minutes. With the permission of the participants, all interviews were audio-recorded.CommunityNorth District was studied for several reasons. First, North District is adjacent to the broader with mainland China and consequently complaints in respect to the “pouring in” of mainland tourists and parallel traders were observed. Second, localist marches, i.e. reclamation actions have occurred since 2012. Third, local stores remain great vibrancy and popularity in the communities despite of the rising of shopping centers.ParticipantsThe sample was comprised of 12 young residents who have/ had been living in North District for at least 10 years. There were 4 men and 8 women participants, with ages ranging from 18 to 30. The informants’ narratives with regard to spatial changes/ changes in physical environment (resources), their values and feelings towards these changes (values), relationship between these feelings and the power base of the communities (power) would be solicited.
