Gender, Race, and Television

Analyze representations of gender and race in television programs. You should pick a comparison group, such as: comparing one cartoon geared towards boys, one towards girls; two different sitcoms about families; dramas geared towards women and men; different types of videos, such as rap, pop, or country; etc. You should watch 2-3 episodes of each show, or 1 hour of each type of music video.In your analysis, look at the representations of gender and race. What are the main narratives? How many men and women appear? How many people of different racial/ethnic backgrounds? What roles do they play? If there are animal or non-human characters (cartoons), are they presumed to be male or female? What are the main themes about gender and race? What do the images convey about men’s and women’s social location and roles?FormatYour paper must contain 3 key parts:Introduction: First describe the question you are addressing: what are you analyzing? Methods: Describe the methods you have used to do your research. For example, which magazines have you analyzed? What shows did you watch? Describe why you picked your magazines, cartoons, shows, etc. to analyze, and what you did to analyze them.Results and Conclusion: Describe the patterns you found in your analysis. Explain what implications you think it has for gender or race issues.As with any paper, organization, clarity, grammar, formatting, etc., count.
