His grades have been slipping and he seems to put out little effort. He used to be a very good student but within the last year has become apathetic about most things. He doesn’t go out much and often comes home and goes to his room to watch tv. He was recently caught stealing some money from a friend’s locker at school. The friend’s family nor the school want to press charges but when confronted by the principal and his mother, he said he didn’t know why he did it. Paul is a 12-year-old male who is shy, well-groomed, and very polite. He rarely speaks unless spoken to. He will answer questions but when possible, his answers tend to be “yes or no” and when open-ended, he gives little information. When you call to set up an appointment she shares with you the following. He is the youngest child in a family of four children. He has an older brother, age 22, who is going to college in another city. He had two sisters, who were twins. One of his sisters was killed by a drunk driver when Paul was 5. He doesn’t remember much about the accident or his sister. The other sister is 20, married, and lives in Texas. Paul’s parents were divorced when he was 10. His father still lives in the area and Paul sees him on a weekly basis. The father lives with another woman whom Paul doesn’t really care for. They began living together about a year ago. Paul has become increasingly uncomfortable going to his father’s house. The father does not return your phone calls for requests to be involved in helping Paul. Paul’s mother asks if it is okay if she brings her sister who is very helpful to her as she tries to raise Paul. They live in the same apartment complex and the families are very close. His aunt is a retired police officer and is very concerned about Paul’s behavior. She says she is probably too lenient with him but doesn’t know what else to do. She describes the extended family as close. They spend lots of their free time together. Her home is always filled with relatives on the weekends. Paul’s mother and aunt both attend the first visit. At the start of the first visit, Paul’s aunt is very assertive and expresses the need to do something before Paul ends up in more legal trouble. She sees Paul’s mother as being too “easy on him” and his father as “not knowing what is going on”. The mother’s presentation is one of concern and confusion. She admits that she doesn’t really understand what is going on for Paul. She tries her best to help him, but with a great deal of shame she admits that she doesn’t know how to read, had a terrible time in school as a kid, and dropped out as soon as she could. Because of this, she doesn’t help him with his school work. They both express to you that they don’t know what to do. You thank them both for coming in to talk to you and say to them “I know you are here to talk about… but… (this is a prompt for where you are to begin).
