This class is learning Asian American Studies by watching movie. Please do 1 page for assignment 1 and 1 page for assignment 2.The Miss Saigon Controversy involved the successful British musical play, Miss Saigon, and its star Jonathan Pryce. Pryce was playing the Eurasian engineer in blatant yellow face i.e. taped eyes, yellow make-up. When the production prepared to come to New York and Broadway, Asian American actors and community members protested against the portrayal of a Caucasian as an Asian. They argued that the production violated open casting of Asian American actors for the role of the engineer. They also said that it was objectionable to have a white man depicting an Asian. The Executive Producer of the show, Cameron Mackintosh, claimed the protesters were interfering with artistic expression. In the end, Jonathan Pryce opened as the engineer in Miss Saigon. But since then Asian American actors have also played the engineer. Jon Jon Briones in particular is playing this pivotal role in the current revival of Miss Saigon on Broadway. But was this a victory? Some don’t think so, particularly Vietnamese Americans. They object to the story and the repugnant representation of the Vietnamese. 1: Please view the Nightline interview and Erin Quill’s speech on diversity in the theatre.
