Each of us has made a purchase of a product or service that, upon later reflection, we have regretted. Pick a product or service that left you dissatisfied. Why were you dissatisfied with your purchase? Look around your closet, your basement or your garage. Is there an item there that you wonder why on earth you purchased in the first place, or perhaps after your purchase of this item, you were disappointed with it? Identify that item, and if possible, provide a photo of it. Ideas could include: an item in your closet you never wear, an item in your home that either you received as a gift or purchased yourself and never used, an item in your garage that is taking up space because “someday it might be useful”?Provide a description of that item that is the mistake in your closet, basement, or garage. (In addition, if you can, attach a photo of the item.)Examine the reasons why you feel regret at your purchase or receipt of this item.Discuss this “mistake” in your closet. Why did you regret purchase or receipt of this item that no longer meets your needs? Identify, using Attribution theory, the following factors:stability = Is the cause of your dissatisfaction temporary or permanent? Are you stuck with this item? How could you return, dispose of, or discard this item? Could you recycle it? Are you in a position to return it to a retailer? Did you know right away that this item would not meet your needs, or did it take a while to figure this out?focus = Was this a result of consumer decision making, OR marketer misinformation? If this was your own decision making issue, how could you avoid this in the future? If this was a result of receiving incorrect information from the marketer/company, how could you handle this with this with the marketer/company as a result?controllability = Was your receipt of this item under your control? Did you participate at all in the purchase decision? Why or why not?Surprising, the majority of dissatisfied consumers do not complain. How would you tactfully approach a company/retailer and describe your dissatisfaction with a recent purchase that you made? What evidence could you present of your dissatisfaction to support your confidence in your request? Provide an example here which can either be related to the above questions, or a different purchase you made. How do you think the company or marketer would handle your request?Think of any example where you did attempt to complain to a company about their product or service. Do you feel that you were treated fairly as a result? Would you continue to recommend this company/retailer to others as a result of your experience? Why or why not?
