OverviewYou will write a essay that critically examines a film of your choice. You will go beyond formal analysis to discuss a larger significance or impact the film has. Use outside sources including scholarly articles and relevant film criticism to investigate your topic. This is not a movie review. Your essay should NOT simply be a plot summary or personal evaluation of the movie.Consider the following approaches to developing your thesis:Auteur TheoryHow does the director’s personal background and body of work influence the film?Genre StudyWhat formulas, themes, and conventions associated with the film’s particular genre are used or ignored?Social/ Cultural AnalysisIs there anything to be learned about humanity by watching the film? What underlying message is the film conveying about society, culture, gender, race, class etc.?Historical AnalysisAre historical events depicted realistically or accurately in the film? What do these motivations contribute to the film’s meaning?Structure of the Paper1) INTRO- Write an engaging introduction with a thesis statement that posits a challenging opinion or argument about the film. Make it original and interesting.2) BODY- The first body paragraph of your essay should be a summary of the film. It must contain the title, director, year of release and a brief plot summary. It may contain: screenwriter, sound designer, cinematographer, editor, actor etc.Subsequent paragraphs should support the main argument set out in your introduction through careful analysis.
