Langston Hughes’s poem, “Harlem” arguably explores race in the context of the Harlem Renaissance, an early 20th Century artistic and political movement involving African American artists and exploring race in America. Hughes asks, “what happens to a dream deferred?” For Hughes, racism stands between African Americans and the American Dream (or at least, that’s one reading…). In your third paper, make an argument that explores Hughes’ experience and response to racism. In so doing, you must also consider the ideas expressed in Arnold Rampersad’s Introduction to the Collected Works.
