For this assignment, you are to reflect on the Progressivist political views we covered inclass. In particular, you must discuss Woodrow Wilson’s view of politics, though you shouldsupplement this with a consideration of Theodore Roosevelt and/or Franklin Delano Roosevelt.The first part of your essay will simply be a review to demonstrate your understanding ofProgressive views: briefly outline the Progressive critique of American government as conceivedby the framers and explain how presidential leadership can overcome these problems. Afterreviewing, your major task is to offer your own evaluation of the Progressive view of Americangovernment. You may focus on the view of the Presidency or the view of politics more broadly.To offer a framework for a response: you might draw on the Founders (Federalists or AntiFederalists) for a critical response, you might agree wholeheartedly with the diagnosis ofgovernment and the needs of society (in which case, you should further explain the problemswith the founding views, drawing on readings from class), you could agree with the progressivegoal but disagree with the means (in which case, what’s an alternative?), or you could haveanother response altogether.
