Postpartum depression affects not only women, but partners and children. Discuss the current rates of diagnosis and treatment of postpartum depression. Relate your knowledge of postpartum depression to personal experience (a patient, family member, yourself, friend, or a personal story you have encountered while researching this topic), describe how postpartum depression affected this woman and family and how it has impacted you as a nurse. The stigma regarding postpartum depression in our culture has made it difficult for mothers, who are struggling to bond with their baby and may hide their emotions and concerns. Many women will do this because they are afraid that people will consider them to be an unfit parent. Identify how depression affects women and their families, investigate the effectiveness of tools that have been used to screen for depression, and compare those tools to those used in current practice for the women you are caring for at your clinical site (both as inpatients and as outpatients).
