Gender role development theory essentially falls into two main categories, biological and social-cognitive. (1) With regards the social-cognitive perspective, cognitive-developmental theory stresses that children progress through three stages of gender role development, from a general understanding of gender at age 3, to an appreciation of gender stability through time, and finally to a complete understanding of gender invariance at age seven. (2) A child’s perception of themselves comes about at this time, and their own- sex schema may develop. Biology is a major factor in this process, and neither biological or social theories can account for 100% of a child’s posit of self. Social constructs regarding gender roles can have a monumental influence on the way a child develops their sense of self within the world. The father teaching his sons to be “tough” will likely have sons that value those characteristics, regardless of their own related abilities. The mother teaching daughters to be effeminate will convey to her children that those traits have value for them. Again, both of these social-cognitive stimuli can engrain in a child’s mind what is expected of them, but cannot fully create the child’s own gender role and self assuredness. As an example, gender androgyny is far more common than many realize, and the spectrum therein includes far more than gentianella. XX and XY chromosomes are often attributed to being strictly female or strictly male, however differing hormone levels, primary sex characteristics and secondary sex characteristics (breasts, bone structure etc.) can all exist. Different variations from XX and XY controlling all male and all female aspects, biologically, present in roughly 2% of the U.S. population. (3) That’s the same percentage as genetic redheads. Raising girls and boys, without acknowledgement that it is ok for a boy to cook or a girl to drive a truck does a great disservice to a whole population. Gender norms, I believe, propagate gender norms and nothing more. Personal, behavioral and environmental factors all, obviously, influence personality, but I disagree that all boys were made to be raised as boys. Heteronormative as defined by Merriam-Webster is of, relating to, or based on the attitude that homosexuality is the only normal and natural expression of sexuality. (Kowalski) On Bill Nye’s new show Bill Nye Saves the World he had an episode called “ (Murray, 2017)Which means that yes at one-point science said that gender was male or female but now it’s more complex than that. Even younger children can come to understand their gender. By a young age most kids can identify to a gender and sometimes it doesn’t always match to the sex they were assigned at birth. As a society we have to realize that not everyone will fall into the same box that is the “norm.” In truth there is no true norm we as a species is remarkable unique. A person’s gender is a personal thing. The reason that we are seeing more gender fluid persons or transgender is because of a society shift. Being LGBT is no longer frowned upon in most areas. We can walk down the streets and hold our heads up high. No longer having to have to hide in the closet and deny who we are. Speaking from experience hiding who you are is like holding your breath. In the movie “Love Simon” the mother has a conversation with Simon she says “I knew you had a secret. When you were little, you were so carefree. But these last few years, more and more, it almost like I can feel you holding your breath… I need you to hear this: you are still you… you get to exhale now. You get to be more you than you have been in a very long time. You deserve everything you want.” When my partner and friends saw that movie all four of us were bawling our eyes out. It hit the nail on the head and resonated with all of us. Being in the closet is like holding your breath, trying to keep it in and not showing your true self. I say throw all the gender roles out the window when raising kids. Let the boys play with dolls. Let the girls use tools and get dirty. Let children be children and make their own choices. They will choose what roles fit them best. As Bill Nye said in “The Sexual Spectrum” “Sure, this might make things confusing for those who insist everyone pick an M or an F.
