The Great White Hoax and A Campaign of Their Own These two films both involve the 2016 presidential election, from two very different perspectives. The first is about Donald Trump’s campaign, the use of race, and the history of the use of race, or us/them, as a means to appeal to voters, which has resulted in increased divisiveness and polarization in the American electorate and politics. The second film is about the Bernie Sanders campaign in 2016. It shows the work of volunteers who are trying to gain supporters, and discusses the difficulties of a candidate who is a party “outsider.” It is interesting that both Bernie and Trump were not party insiders. Please discuss the similarities and differences you see between these two candidates, and the language and approach they used to appeal to voters. You may want to include a discussion of the earlier candidates featured in the Hoax film as well. The discussion is open to you and your interests. What interests you about the candidates?
