Background InformationDwight Lyman Moody, also known as D.L. Moody, was the greatest evangelist and revivalist in late 19th-century America. Moody (1837-1899) was a native of Northampton, Massachusetts, had a modest upbringing and was working as a Boston shoe salesman when he converted to Christianity in his late teens. Moody then moved to Chicago, where he became president of the Chicago YMCA and started the Illinois Street Church along with several other ministries. During the Civil War, he served with the United States Christian Commission, an organization dedicated to meeting the material and spiritual needs of Union soldiers, and made several trips to the battlefront. After the war, Moody, who had a passionate desire to minister to the “lost,” became a prolific evangelist and revivalist, leading crusades in American cities, and across the Atlantic in the British Isles. He also founded the Student Volunteer Movement, a forerunner to today’s Campus Crusade for Christ, and a Chicago Bible Institute, now known as the Moody Bible Institute. Moody’s exuberant, yet straightforward and down-home preaching style appealed to the masses and his crusades attracted thousands of seekers.
