Why is the issue of brain death included in an ethics course?

Why is the issue of brain death included in an ethics course? In other words, what is the ethical issue(s) related to how we determine death? Based on the readings, who has the most compelling argument? Do you find one side’s argument overwhemingly convincing, or are you left with questions?
