Your patient is a 28 year old male, three days post-MVA. Due to extensive injuries and chest wall trauma, he continues to need mechanical ventilation, but he has been “fighting” the conventional ventilator badly. The usual approaches to improving patient-ventilator synchrony have not worked well, and the Intensivist physician on the case requests that you implement NAVA ventilation. What steps will you take in preparing for and implementing NAVA ventilation for this patient? Explain your rationale for initial NAVA settings.
