For this assignment, you are going to listen to the famous speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “I have a dream”. You may already be familiar with it, perhaps studying it for another class, and that background knowledge can be helpful here. If you are not familiar with the speech, or even its context and significance, that is okay, too, because you are just going to focus on the text itself. The words are quite powerful. NOTE: Be sure to click on “CC” at the bottom of the screen for closed-captioning. If you would prefer to read the speech, a copy of it can be found in FILES.LinkFor this assignment, you will again use Chatfield. On pages 123-128, Chatfield defines “primary source” and the ways to engage with them. He also writes about secondary sources, but since this was a filmed speech, as it was being give, this only qualifies as a primary source. What you will focus on is the following:Authenticity: How can you gauge the authenticity of this speech? (See the bulleted questions on page 125.)Relevance: King is presenting an argument in this speech. He is very clear about it and repeats it throughout the speech. Is this speech, as a source, relevant to today? Is this speech relevant outside of the United States? Why or why not? I keep thinking about this video by Childish Gambino (a satirical argument): Childish Gambino – This Is America (Official Video) Or this recent video and story that blew up social media this past weekend (a story highlighting privilege): White Woman Who Called Cops on Black Man in Central Park Issues Apology | NBC New YorkLastly, you are to look at reputation, bias, and authority of source (see page 127). You are not expected to do any research into King or the event captured on video, but as a critical reader/viewer, how would you evaluate this taped speech through this lens?
