You have just been assigned to investigate allegations of medical neglect of Sally Ann, made by her maternal aunt, Mrs. Martin. Mrs. Martin states that she received a call from her nephew, David (who is 17 years of age), stating that his sister, Sally Ann, has a swollen eye and that their parents will not take her to the doctor. Mrs. Martin states that she spoke to the children’s mother, her sister Mrs. Henderson, and was told her to “mind her own business”. Mrs. Martin is concerned and wants someone to get some help for her niece, Sally Ann.Current Situation: Sally Ann woke up about three weeks ago with a swollen eye. She showed her mother and was told to put a cold towel on it and lay down. The mother told her to pray for her healing. Nothing has changed in more than two weeks. Mrs. Henderson, Sally Ann’s mother, is refusing to take Sally Ann to the doctor because their family does not believe in modern medicine – it conflicts with their religious beliefs. About a week ago, the maternal aunt (Mrs. Martin) went to see Sally Ann at home and her eye was swollen shut. Sally Ann has not been to school in almost two weeks. The school is concerned, but Mrs. Henderson told the teacher that Sally Ann is getting better and will be back to school next week. As Christian Scientists, the Hendersons believe that God will heal Sally Ann. Mr. Henderson has told his wife that Sally Ann’s eye seems to be getting worse and he thinks he needs to treat it or have her eyes seen by a doctor; however, his wife reminded him that he needed to have more faith. Mrs. Henderson feels that Sally Ann’s eye will not heal because of a lack of faith of the people around her. The Hendersons usually isolate themselves when someone in their family is sick.Family Background: Albert (the husband/father, 39) and Lisa Ann Henderson (the wife/mother, 40) identify as White and have been married for 19 years. They reside in an upper-middle-class neighborhood. Albert and Lisa met in college and fell in love. Lisa Ann got her degree in chemistry and considers herself a person who loves science. Albert was a pre-med major in college. While doing his residency as a physician he was always concerned about the “sicknesses of the world”. He was very committed to being a physician. However, he recently decided to leave medicine to pursue another career. About 12 years ago, Lisa Ann started to study Christian Science. She was introduced to this perspective by one of her older brothers. She is very committed to the religion. About five years ago, Albert agreed to join the faith because he states he has seen so many doctors make major mistakes where people died as a result. He thinks that if people could have faith in god, they could be healed. Sally Ann (daughter, 12) is friendly and is excited about faith in God. David (son, 17) is very independent and is beginning to question the validity of their faith. He thinks the parents are being unrealistic and that they need to have open minds. David is becoming more defiant toward them because he says that they don’t listen when he has tried to talk to them about his questions and ideas about God, faith, the meaning of life, and modern medicine.
