What is it trying to say ABOUT love, or freedom and responsibility?

Choose either Chekhov’s The Brute or Ibsen’s A Doll House and write an essay analyzing the theme. your job is to figure out what message the play is trying to convey? And as I’ve said many times before, the stories in this book all contain relatively complex messages, so don’t tell me that The Brute is about “love,” or that A Doll House is about “freedom and responsibility.” Those answers will not be sufficient. They just raise the questions: What is it trying to say ABOUT love, or freedom and responsibility?
