Briefly describe the history of the union.

1) Find a union member (preferably current), but if a current union member is not available, one within the last 5 years will do. This can be one of your other instructors, friends, neighbors, relatives, or coworkers. A personal interview either in person or over the telephone would work best, but e-mail will do if necessary. 2) Research the union to which the interview subject belongs. What are the characteristics of its members (national numbers, education level, industry, age, etc.)? Briefly describe the history of the union. What issues is the union currently pursuing (legislation, worker education, etc.)? (Be sure to properly cite and reference your sources) 3) Ask them why they joined the union; what benefits they receive as a member; if they feel the union has improved their pay and work conditions; if they are involved with the union and if so, how. These points are a starting point. You are expected to come up with your own questions as well. 4) Write up your interview. State what your views on unions were prior to the interview. Provide your analysis which should at minimum include anything surprising from the interview, how the union member’s views of their union impact the information provided – did they have a bias?, and how, if at all, the interview altered your opinion of unions. 5) Respond to 2 of your classmates postings. Note any similarities or differences in your experience.
