This first analysis paper asks students to consider the role of the individual in sustainability. After reading the assigned lecture and articles, viewing the two videos, and completing the carbon footprint calculator activity (Slide 9), consider your own environmental behavior and the environmental behavior of your household members (family, roommates, etc.).Some questions to address:Do you consider yourself an environmentally conscious individual? Why or why not?Do you engage in pro-environmental behavior on a daily basis? If so, how?Given what you learned from Week 1 course materials, do you feel that any major changes are needed in your own environmental behaviors? What areas of your life if any, could you change in order to practice more sustainable behaviors? How important do you feel that environmental issues and your own environmental behavior is in comparison to your other socioeconomic issues (economic, employment, education, housing security, etc.)? *Here, you may also consider why environmentalism is often associated with the white middle- to upper-middle class and less among poor ethnic minorities. Can improving one’s environmental behavior have an impact (positive or negative) on their other socioeconomic factors listed above? Why or why not?Do you think that your knowledge of the current environmental issues such as climate change, pollution and overpopulation will affect decisions that you make in the future around employment, housing or even starting a family? Why or why not? This paper is an opportunity for students to explore and connect multiple topics in sustainable behavior in one cohesive and comprehensive reflection and discussion on individual behavior (primarily their own and/or others around them) and environmental concerns. A primary goal of this assignment is to draw on multiple sources to demonstrate an ability to comprehensively critique and analyze the multifaceted nature of sustainability and behavior and to understand the various nuances (ideological, sociocultural, etc.) that enable or prohibit sustainable behavior.
