Specifically we will talk about disparities in health care. As some of you may know, black and latinx Americans are much more likely to die from COVID-19 than white Americans. There is some speculation that genetics the cause of these disparities, although, there is no evidence of this. There is also some speculation that racism and systemic disparities are the cause of these disparities.See the link below:https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/voices/racism-not-genetics-explains-why-black-americans-are-dying-of-covid-19/ (Links to an external site.)In medicine, there was a long-held assumption that genetic ancestry is related to health through genetic effects. However, that assumption is now being called into question. For example, African Americans are known to have higher blood pressure than white Americans. It was long assumed that these differences were due to genetic differences, however, a recent study showed that those differences disappeared when corrected for socioeconomic status.
