Module 5: Political PartiesThis exercise asks you to apply some of the information and concepts in the material in this module to the politics and policies related to immigration in Texas (about which there was some discussion in the “Public Opinion” module).First, read the Houston Chronicle article “Border solution tumbles into partisan divide” (link below). This piece is about a relatively recent immigration proposal by two members of Congress from Texas, Republican Senator John Cornyn and Democratic Representative Henry Cuellar (Laredo), as well as a bill introduced by Texas’s other US Senator, Republican Ted Cruz. This article provides context for the graphic below.Second, examine the graphic below, which presents results from an item on the June 2014 University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll. This will give you a lens into Texans’ attitudes on immigration through the lenses of partisan attitudes and what you have learned about party politics in Texas. Respondents were asked whether they agreed or disagreed with the statement, “Undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States should be deported immediately.”
