1) BLM PROTEST REPORTING: Did the news media accurately and fairly cover the Black Lives Matters protests spurred by the police killings of two black Americans, George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and later, Rayshard Brooks? Look for and present critiques and observations from expert/authoritative/informed sources on the ethical aspects of news reporting on the nationwide protests, and the police-related deaths behind them. No personal opinion allowed. Some issues you could consider: Did the media communicate well the scope, character and purpose of the various protests, violent or non-violent? Or did journalists fail at parsing sufficiently what was happening, who was involved, and why, for audiences? Did the media appear to stereotype or exhibit bias when describing and conveying protest activity AND/OR police/military responses? Does violent protest activity warrant more media attention than non-violent protest because it is more dramatic and destructive, or should the press avoid focusing too much on looting, burning rock-throwing or other violent acts to avoid inspiring more of the same? Were there any missing dimensions to the coverage? Important: Your focus is an analysis of new media behavior, not police behavior, regarding the protest activity. 2) POST-TRUTH: We are now supposedly living in a “post-truth” era, defined as a state of affairs during which “objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.” A few manifestations of this have been increasing polarization in politics, and the leveling of “fake news” claims against the mainstream media. Politifact calls the fake news phenomenon “the boldest sign of a post-truth society.” If journalism traditionally focuses on truth telling, then what ethical challenges does a post-truth environment create for the news media? And for news consumers? How did we get into this situation and why (if that can be lucidly explained). Is technology (the internet, social media etc.) largely to blame? What are some recent and prominent examples of facts and truth losing their potency, their power? Research and present expert/authoritative/informed opinions on this. No personal opinion or first person viewpoint permitted. Paper requirements: — Length: 800 to 1,000 words. — Write your name, the course name and the date in the upper left hand corner of the first page above the text.– Do not write a headline or title for this paper. — Consult and cite at least five expert/authoritative/informed sources for the paper. — Sources can be documents with firsthand information (for example, reports, studies, books, and relevant websites with authoritative and factual information), news media reports and other news accounts, interviewed experts, or a combination. Avoid citing second or third hand information (for example, a news story citing data mentioned by another news organization that got that information from a report – find the report and quote from it directly).– The current course textbook DOES NOT count as an official source for this assignment. The information you gather must come from other research that you do. — Follow journalism’s rule of factual and objective reporting and writing (for non-opinion pieces). You can angle your paper in a particular direction based on your research, but you are not writing a first person, this-is-what-I-think piece. You are gathering and relaying other informed viewpoints on your topic.– Make sure you cite your sources for each component of your paper per journalism’s attribution/transparency requirement. Use a mixture of direct quotes and paraphrase (the paper should consisted mostly of the latter) and remember to incorporate transitions as you move from point to point. The paper must show organization and a logical narrative flow. — Make sure you attribute information from your sources in the body of the text, so I can see what source you tapped for each paper element.
