Oedipus Rex – Reflective Writing
For this first reflective writing assignment, consider the aspects of the Sophoclean hero and their predestined doom at the hand of the Gods. The people of Greece found these plays to be quite entertaining despite knowing the hero would always meet their end because of destiny beyond their control. Our culture, though, prefers works that stress the hero overcoming the odds, Gods, fate, or other, to map a destiny that is their own. Consider your own preferences, which story subscribes more to your ethos, you belief in destiny, and how do you evaluate the stories of Oedipus using your own values?
