Now that you’ve defined a specific problem, you’ll need to research the most important historical events and trends that shape this problem—your analysis of historical contexts and visual representation of these contexts will be major components of the CP. In a Word document, create a timeline of the most important events, trends, factors, and causes that contributed to the problem as it exists today. For the most part, you should restrict your timeline to events/causes that occurred within the last 60 years (since the 1950s). Note that you may not need to go very far back in time – the problem you’re researching may have just started a few years ago.As you develop your timeline, include at least one cause from each of the following categories:Political/Legislative Causes: How have specific laws and regulations, elected officials, government agencies/branches, political movements, etc. shaped the problem?Financial/Economic/Business Causes: How have economic trends and events shaped the problem? Consider consumer demand, investment trends, tax policy, economic policies, corporate actions, etc.Technology/Industry/Labor Causes: How have technological developments, manufacturing, and/or labor trends shaped the problem? Consider inventions and new products, technological impacts on individuals and institutions, industrial regulation and professional oversight, labor markets and trends, etc.Social/Cultural Causes: How have specific ideals, sensibilities, customs and traditions shaped the problem or how we currently view the problem? Consider social movements and cultural trends, public opinion as expressed through social media, art, literature, film/television, etc.Think carefully about the relevance of the historical causes you choose to include. Your timeline’s usefulness for the CP will depend on the quality of the history you depict. In most cases, things like “the domestication of the dog” and “the Industrial Revolution” will not be very relevant to your analysis of a current problem. Depending on the problem you’re researching, “the invention of [insert any product here]” may or may not be relevant. Don’t think of historical events as merely “things that happened,” but rather “things that contributed to the current situation.”
