It is no mystery that everyone’s family is different, but communication scholars have done work to define patterns of family communication. Ascan Koerner and Mary Ann Fitzpatrick (2006) identified two categories of rules about communication in the family: conversation and conformity.Conversation involves the degree to which families favor an open climate of discussion on a wide array of topics. Conformity refers to how much a family stresses uniformity of values, beliefs, and attitudes. These two orientations can combine in four ways.
