Submit Module 6 Writing Assignment Mass Media as Agent of SocializationTo complete tis assignment you will view clips from several documentaries. You are not required to watch the documentaries in their entirety in order to complete the assignment. (of course you may if you have time and inclination)The primary question being explored in both videos is “what is the role of media in 1 domain of human experience: psychological well-being and gender expectations. The first set of videos explores the role of media in psychological well-being in the 21st century. We begin with a You Tube video “Nothing to Tell but a Lot to Sell” In this very short video, Gerbner sets the context for modern media and the role of story telling in human civilization (Cultivation Theory). Next we view “The Mean World Syndrome: Media Violence and the Culture of Fear”According to Gerbner, the telling of stories, the cultivation of a sense of who we are, and what the world is like, has always been the principal shaper of human behavior. Violence has always been present in storytelling and is sometimes necessary to the message of a particular story, artistic or journalistic feature. But what Gerbner finds troubling about today’s violence is that it often lacks consequences, is glamorous or humorous, and leads to a happy ending –a highly unrealistic view of the actual consequences of violence. Violent media images now inundate our homes through television, movies, the Internet, and other media so much that children now see about 8,000 murders by the end of elementary school, and about 200,000 murders by age 18. For Gerbner, it is not simply the sheer number of violent acts in media that are important but the larger story this violent media tells, and, especially, how it reinforces and normalizes a certain worldview.Writing PromptAfter viewing the You Tube Video and Part I of The Mean World Syndrome, answer the following question(minimum 250 words – maximum 500 words): Gerbner says that violence has always existed in storytelling – from fairy tales to Shakespeare. But he also says this violence is very different from much of what we see today. In Gerbner’s view, how does the violence in these older stories differ from violence in many of today’s programs and movies? Do you agree with this distinction in type of violence? Do you disagree or agree with Gerbner that mass media has produced the “mean world syndrome”? (why or why not?) Keep in mind the analytical distinction between “mean world syndrome” and arguments that claim viewing violent mass media causes more violence.ItemSocial Enterprise Project: Two Annotated Peer-Reviewed ReferencesSocial Enterprise Project Face images with critical thinking elements. Source: Creative CommonsThe majority of points for this course is associated with the social enterprise project. You will be asked to identify a social problem either here in the U.S. or globally. I have a list of social issues located in the course link to your left if you are having trouble deciding on an issue. Once a topic has been identified, you will design a social enterprise to help solve the problem. Keep in mind most social problems are multi-faceted, you may only be able to address only one or two significant factors contributing to perpetuation of the social problem. Not to worry you are not being asked to actually start the business or even come up with a detailed business plan – this is the discovery and concept phase of generating ideas and bringing them forward to into a viable business model. The goal of the social enterprise project is to increase student’s awareness of contemporary global humanitarian issues and innovative strategies being implemented to empower people to improve their life chances. The social enterprise project-based learning strategy allows students to think globally and act locally by identifying best practice models that could be implemented in their own community. The rubric for the final power point presentation provides you with all the elements you need to include in your social enterprise model. Each section of the final presentation is completed over the course of the semester using scaffold assignments. There are 5 steps/assignments to complete the project:1.
