Analyze your chosen zombie book and develop an argument about the function of zombies in the novel. What is their purpose?Think about the various scholarly essays we’ve read about the functions of zombie lore. In general, scholars argue all folklore teaches us something. They also argue zombies are specifically “barometers of cultural anxiety,” meaning they often reflect deeper societal fears (Dendle). For example, many claim Dawn of the Dead represents our obsession with consumer culture and how we may be afraid it is taking over. Similarly, White Zombie was said to illustrate racial tension in the 1930s. What is the function of zombies in your novel? What cultural moment is the author commenting on, and what are they trying to say?Think of this as a literary analysis. Ultimately, your thesis should be something like, “In Max Brooks’s World War Z, zombies are used as a literary tool to comment on the effects of war” (yours will likely be more sophisticated, but that is the general idea). You’re using the novel to build an argument about how zombies function in the novel/what lesson or message the author is trying to convey to readers.Your essay should be 4-5 pages, double spaced with 12 pt Times New Roman font and one inch margins. It should include quotes from your novel. If you’d like, you may look up critical essays about the novel and quote from other scholars as well, though this is not a requirement. Similarly, you may quote from Dendle, Bishop, Kang, or any other scholar we’ve read, but again, this isn’t a requirement. The only text you MUST quote from is your novel.
