Please be sure to have read Chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6 before embarking on this exercise!.Our third Analysis & Reflection Paper will ask you to: .Watch and analyze the nonverbal behaviors exhibited by key figures delivering information about COVID-19Compare and contrast these examples Reflect on how nonverbal communication might impact the perceived credibility of the source and/or influence how the information is received/applied. In sum, our goal is to examine multiple, varied samples of recent public communication on the topic of COVID-19, as a means of honing our observation skills, comparing and contrasting differing styles, and considering the effectiveness of nonverbal communication that accompanies verbal messaging. .Please note: This is a paper about nonverbal behavior, not politics. Try to remain as unbiased as you can while watching, and refrain from political editorializing while writing..ACTIVITYAny of the following topics are eligible for observation and discussion; focus on whatever sticks out to you most about the individual speakers’ behaviors: Physical appearance and clothingEye behaviorsPosture, body orientation, positioning, etc. Facial expressions, including affect displays and conversational signals (such as facial adaptors, illustrators, regulators); smiles, including Duchenne, non-Duchenne, qualifier, compliance, and coordination smiles; micro-expressions; blendsVoice behaviors, including voice qualities (an individual’s unique way of speaking) and vocalizations (such as vocal qualifiers/intonation and segregates) Gestures, including illustrators (such as emblematic, deictic, iconic, metaphoric, and batonic gestures) Observation 1: White House Coronavirus Task Force Press BriefingClick here and select one or more White House coronavirus press briefings to view. Pick clips where you can observe multiple people speaking (e.g., President Donald Trump, Vice Mike President Pence, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Dr. Deborah Birx, Dr. Jerome Adams, etc.). You do not need to watch the entirety of any one briefing, but watch enough to give you plenty of “data” (i.e., observed behaviors) to analyze. Observation 2: Gubernatorial Coronavirus News Conference Click here, then follow these instructions exactly: In the Video Library search box near the top of the page, type in the name of your state’s *governor* followed by the words coronavirus news conference (e.g., “greg abbott coronavirus news conference”). Select one or more news conferences to view. You do not need to watch the entirety of any one conference, but watch enough to give you plenty of “data” (i.e., observed behaviors) to analyze. Observation 3: Coronavirus News Coverage Select more than one 24-hour news network (e.g., CNN, Fox News, etc.) and watch clips of them covering topics relating to COVID-19. You can watch this kind of coverage live on cable or find clips online via the network’s website, YouTube, etc. As mentioned, watch clips from multiple networks and anchors to be able to compare and contrast. – – -Write-UpLength: 2 full pages minimum (but you are welcome to write more than this). This third paper is a bit more open-ended than previous papers, meaning you have a lot of room/freedom to explore! There are a few prompts provided below, but overall your goal should be to walk me through your observations and your analysis, comparisons, and reflections over what you observed. As mentioned above, stay focused on nonverbals, not politics.Pick any of the nonverbal communication areas/topics listed above in the “Activity” section (as few or as many as you want!) and tell me what you noticed in relation to the nonverbal behaviors visible in the conferences/broadcasts. What specific behaviors did you observe from the speakers being featured? What are your thoughts on the functionality or effectiveness of these behaviors in these specific contexts? Were there any similar themes or trends (or, conversely, glaring differences) across all of the clips you watched? As someone who is watching and trying to process everything that’s going on in the country and the world right now, how do these nonverbal communication cues impact your perceptions of the speakers’ credibility/trustworthiness/likability/etc., your level of concern or stress, your degree of feeling informed and/or able to make good decisions for you and your family, etc.? In your view, what role does nonverbal communication play in this current moment in time, as it relates to national leaders and the media?
