Write a comparative analysis of two works of art from 1900 to the Present. Throughout your paper, you will be translating what can be considered predominantly visual elements into a verbal/written form.Select two different pieces of artwork for which you will feel comfortable comparing their stylistic and iconographic elements. Your paper will consist of two parts: a stylistic comparison and an iconographic comparison.First, reflect and decide what aspect(s) and attribute(s) of the two works stand out to you and whether or not these aspect(s) and attribute(s) are shared between the two works. Trust your eyes. Keep this in mind as you progress through your paper. Introduce each piece of artwork (you can include images if you wish) and discuss each one stylistically – name and discuss individual design elements of each piece of artwork – scale, proportion, colors, lines, textures, lighting, etc. Compare each one to the other… What mediums are used? How is color incorporated? What techniques did each artist use? The goal here is to point out what is significant about each piece of artwork and how each artist incorporated his/her own style in the piece. Ask yourself why each artist made specific decisions, and how these decisions could have been otherwise… e.g. Why are the flowers painted red? Why are the brush strokes so forced? Why did the artist choose metal?Secondly, you will have to discuss the iconography (“the meaning or interpretation”) of each piece and compare. To do this, you will have to discuss what each piece of artwork means (to you as an artist / creator) and what is significant to the viewer. You may have to do additional research. Include any important biographical details about the artist(s). Take into account such factors as time period, social context, historical influence, identity, symbolism, etc. Think about the audience and their reaction(s) to each piece.Finally, what can you conclude about your analysis? Why did you choose the pieces you did, and what can be said about the power an artist has on a viewer?
