Each student will develop an informational and educational brochure on a genetic disorder/condition. Students will research the genetic disorder/condition of choice. It must be a genetic disorder/condition. (Sickle Cell Anemia)The brochure is geared toward educating individuals, families, groups and/or communities. The goal of the brochure is to educate the community. The brochure should be creative as well as informative so interested individuals can be better educated on the genetic disorder/condition. Be sure to include accurate, up-to-date information and graphics that illustrate important ideas. Keep within a range of about a 6th to 7th grade reading level; resources located in Modules/Week 6. Use the following ideas to guide the information placed in the brochure:•Other names disorder (any common names)•Causes the disorder (mutation, nondisjunction)•Gene or chromosome affected by this disorder (X, Y, #21)•Prenatal tests for this disorder•Symptoms •Population affected; can anyone be a candidate for the disorder•Inheritance pattern (Is it sex-linked, recessive, and/or dominant)•Medical assistance needed, further assistance needed, as the individual grows older, long-term outlook •Treatments or cures•Could this disorder have been prevented•Can this individual have children in the future; will those children be affected•Status of research on this disorder; is there a cure coming soon Assignment Criteria:Students will create and provide patients with information about a genetic disorder/condition of the student choice addressing the following criteria: 1.Create a brochure for a doctor’s office waiting room for individuals, families, groups and/or communities. 2.Provide information on the genetic transmission of the selected genetic disorder/condition. 3.Identify five-six areas from the guided questions above to include in the brochure, student’s choice.
