The evolution of life is significantly altered by these impact events. In the 1990s, a comet called Shoemaker Levy 9 collided with Jupiter. This was a major event and occurred very close to home. If the comet had hit Earth, we would all be extinct. It is important to note that this is the only impact event that the whole human civilization has ever seen. However, the dinosaurs were affected by an impact event much like this one. At that time, mammals lived alongside dinosaurs. The removal of the predator dinosaur allowed for the evolution of the mammals, which eventually evolved into humans.
